I Phone 6 Plus Review

iPhone 6 Plus : Review

Apple just unleashed the big reveal. The I Phone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are here, out to re-convert millions who have been tempted by a Samsung Galaxy S5 of late.

This year Apple offers two new phones, but there’s not an obvious cheaper/expensive split as there was last year with the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C as there was last year.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are two true top-tier phones. But what’s the big difference? Size is the major one. The Plus has a much larger display. However, there are a few other little tweaks you should take notice of before deciding which to buy.

iPhone 6 Plus : Design

iPhone 6 Plus: curved aluminium, gold or light/dark silver 7.1mm

It’s all change this year for Apple’s iPhone designs. Curves are in and severe edges are out.

We see these moves in both the iPhone 6 and its bigger brother the iPhone 6 Plus. Both phones are made of aluminium, with a steel Apple logo for that extra bit of hardness, and a toughened glass front (one with Ion reinforcement apparently).

Naturally, the iPhone 6 Plus is going to be a lot larger than the standard iPhone 6. If you’ve only ever used iPhones you’re going to want to try one before buying. Some of you may find it that bit too big.

The iPhone 6 Plus is also a tiny big thicker than the iPhone 6, although these are two seriously slim phones. The iPhone 6 is 6.8mm thick, the iPhone 6 Plus 7.1mm thick. There’s hardly anything in it.

Both phones come in the same shades we saw in the iPhone 5S. That means dark grey/silver, light grey/silver and a muted gold colour.

iPhone 6 Plus : Screen

iPhone 6 Plus: 5.5-inch 1,920 x 1080 LCD, optimisation in landscape

Here’s the biggie, quite literally. The iPhone 6 Plus has a much, much larger screen than the iPhone 6.

It uses a 5.5-inch display to the iPhone 6’s 4.7-inch one. Here we see Apple get much closer to the sorts of sizes used by Android phones – iPhones have in the last few years offered much smaller screens by comparison.

There are no great differences in display technology between the two, though. Both use IPS displays – the kind used by Apple for years now – and ion-toughened fronts. We're waiting to hear whether this is the Sapphire screen we've been hearing so much about.

Resolution is higher in the iPhone 6 Plus, and so is pixel density. Where the iPhone 6 has a display of 326ppi just like the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 6 Plus offers 1080p resolution, just like most Android phones of this size. This results in pixel density of 400ppi, a good deal higher.

However, this also means existing apps and games need to be re-scaled, and may be subject to ugly-looking artefacts.

Apple says it has tackled the scaling issue with desktop-grade software, which should get rid of any jagged edges or awkward looking bits. Of course, developers will pretty much start making native 1080p versions of apps straight away so if there are any scaling teething problems, they’ll go away in due course.

iPhone 6 Plus: Camera

iPhone 6 Plus: 8MP camera, 1/3.06-inch sensor, true-tone flash,f/2.2 aperture dual-LED flash, phase detection, OIS

In a somewhat surprising, and slightly disappointing, move, Apple has not really maxed-out the camera in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. While the sensor has been redesigned, the core specs are pretty similar to what we saw in the iPhone 5S.

Both new phones use an 8-megapixel sensor with 1.5 micron sensor pixels, a dual-tone flash and lens of f.2.2 aperture. So far, so ordinary.

The new hardware feature  phones share is phase detection. This is faster than the contrast detection normally used in phone cameras, although it needs to be used at specific points on the sensor – contrast detection can be used anywhere. Still, we know there are multiple focus points for phase detection.

What’s different between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is that the larger phone offers optical image stabilisation where the iPhone 6 uses software stabilisation – not the same thing.

iPhone 6 Plus: CPU and RAM

iPhone 6 Plus: Apple A8 64-bit

There’s a new generation of Apple processor behind the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus – it’s called the Apple A8.

You get the same processor in both phones, a dual-core (reported) 1.4GHz 64-bit CPU. Some of you might raise an eyebrow at a phone with higher resolution having the same CPU power as one with a lower-res screen, but Apple’s recent chipsets are so good we really don’t think it’s going to be an issue.

Apple says the Apple A8 offers 20 per cent greater CPU performance than the Apple A7 and 50 per cent better GPU performance. A lot of the CPU performance is down to a change in the system architecture, with a 20nm process offering greater efficiency than the 28nm process of the Apple A7.

iPhone 6 Plus: Storage

iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus

iPhone 6 Plus: 16/64/128GB

As ever, neither of the new Apple phones offers expandable memory. However, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus do raise the storage ceiling, from 64GB to 128GB.

This year, you get to pick between 16GB models (for the scrimpers), 64GB ones and – for the flush – 128GB phones. An iPhone 6 Plus with 128GB of internal storage may be a dream for watching movies on, offering enough memory for a hundred SD-quality films or 25-plus HD ones.

iPhone 6 Plus: Battery Life

iPhone 6 Plus: 14 hours video, 12 hours browsing

Apple is very keen on maintaining battery performance across its generations of devices. This year, we see the iPhone 6 make a slight improvement over last year’s iPhone 5S, but the iPhone 6 Plus is in the league above, making its stamina a bit closer to top Android phones like the Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5.

The iPhone 6 gets you 11 hours of video or 11 hours of browsing off a charge. The iPhone 6 Plus will last for 14 hours of video or 12 hours browsing.

Let’s not forget that it’s not just a case of having room for more battery as the Plus model also has to power a larger screen. Apple clearly decided to sacrifice battery for the sake of slimness a bit in the ‘standard’ iPhone 6.

iPhone : Early Verdict

Big or small? Apple has taken real pains to make sure the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus offer a pretty consistent experience. Similar screen tech, the same processor and similar-grade cameras make sure there’s no weak link here.

However, we do like that the extra display space of the iPhone 6 Plus and its greater battery life makes it more of a power user device. Meaning it may well be of more interest to the enthusiasts reading this right now.
